How to learn the violin by yourself
So you’ve decided to try to learn the violin on your own. Maybe you don’t have the time or disposable income to spend on lessons, maybe you’re an autodidact and just prefer to teach yourself, or maybe you plan to take lesson eventually but want to get the basics down first. Whatever the case, it’s certainly not impossible to learn the violin on your own. Here are some of my best tips.
Decide what style of music you’d like to play. This will dictate the method books and lessons you use. If you’re unsure, I recommend starting with classical music. Through classical music, you can learn the skills necessary to branch out into any other genre later down the line.
Choose a method book or online learning program. Many adult beginners enjoy Essential Elements because it has explicit instructions for posture and also teaches students how to read music in a very step by step manner. Personally, I’m partial to the Suzuki method, but if you choose to learn via Suzuki you most likely will need a bit of extra guidance because the skills learned in each piece aren’t always obvious. Link YouTube Playlist. When learning from online violin teachers, my best advice is to pick one teacher and stick with them. Teachers often have differing opinions and advice so it’s easiest to pick one and stick with them.
