Amazing Grace: Violin Tutorial and Sheet Music
Amazing Grace is a Christian hymn published in 1779, written by John Newton, and English Anglican clergyman. This is arguably one of the most well known hymns of all time and is now used for a variety of Christian and secular purposes. The version presented here is a suitable for beginner violinists. It is in the key of G Major, meaning there is one sharp, F#, and only requires the use of the E and A strings. It is in 3/4 time, meaning that there are 3 beats (quarter notes) per measure. The hardest rhythm is a dotted quarter note (which gets 1 and 1/2 beats) followed by an eighth note (which gets 1/2 of a beat). Additionally, there is a tie connecting the notes between measures 7 and 8. A tie means to hold that note out for the combined value of both notes. In this case, it’s a dotted half note (3 beats) tied to a half note (2 beats), so the high A should be held for 5 beats total. Feel free to add slurs as you fit to help with the tune sound smoother.
